Hope International Improved Student Performance by 25% with AI Tutoring
The Challenge
Hope International Secondary School in Abuja faced a common dilemma: how to provide personalized learning support to 600 students with limited resources. Many families couldn't afford private tutors, creating an achievement gap between students with extra support and those without.
The school experimented with after-school tutoring programs, but they were expensive to run and couldn't scale to reach every student who needed help. Teachers were stretched thin trying to provide individual attention in large classes.
"We could see some students falling behind, not because they weren't capable, but because they needed more one-on-one explanation," explains Mr. Chukwuemeka Obi, Vice Principal Academics. "We needed a scalable solution that could give every student access to personalized support."
The Solution
Silicon Crest's AI Tutor — Honey Island — was exactly what Hope International needed. Unlike other AI tools that simply give answers, Honey Island uses the Socratic method to guide students to discover solutions themselves.
The implementation included a unique feature: interest-based learning. Every student completed a survey about their hobbies and career aspirations. When a student interested in football asks about quadratic equations, Honey Island explains using the parabolic arc of a kicked ball. When a music lover studies sound waves, examples come from their favorite instruments.
Parents and teachers have full visibility into AI conversations, addressing any concerns about unsupervised AI interaction. The school set reasonable daily token limits to encourage focused learning sessions.
The Results
After two terms, the data tells a compelling story. Students actively using the AI Tutor saw an average grade improvement of 25% compared to the previous year. In subjects like Mathematics and Physics — traditionally challenging areas — improvement was even higher at 31%.
Student engagement metrics are remarkable: over 10,000 AI Tutor sessions completed, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 from students. Students report that Honey Island "makes difficult concepts click" and "never makes them feel stupid for asking questions."
Teacher adoption reached 92%, with most teachers actively recommending the AI Tutor to struggling students. Several teachers reported that students are now coming to class better prepared, having previewed concepts with Honey Island.
Most tellingly, Hope International's WAEC results improved significantly, with the percentage of students achieving 5 credits or above (including English and Maths) increasing from 72% to 89%.
“The AI Tutor has been a game-changer. Students who used to struggle in silence now have 24/7 access to patient, personalized explanations. Our WAEC results speak for themselves — a 17 percentage point improvement in students achieving 5 credits. This is what educational equity looks like.”
